Sailboat Delivery Skippers
There is a growing need for services that move sailboats. Every day new sail boats are made and these boats must receive transport to boat shows, charter companies, yacht clubs, college sailing programs, races, cruising venues, and world class events. Delivery experts may be interested in moving boats from slip to slip in the same marina or taking a flotilla of boats across an ocean. Owners of sailboats may assist with the transport or hire a Licensed USCG Captain to move their sailboat. Volunteers and other crew have also been part of deliveries. It can be an excellent way to make money and sail in college during the school year and the summer. If you become part of a delivery this advise should help because it is from successful delivery skippers who have delivered boats to destinations all around the world.
Delivery Skipper Suggestions
During a presentation a delivery skipper mentioned to make sure to reduce the amount of negatives against you. When delivering a boat, a negative may include a new area of sailing, sailing at night, sailing when you are tired, or sailing a new type of boat. Other negatives may be out of your control like sailing in tall seas, high winds, or powerful currents. The idea is to reduce the negatives so that you are as safe as possible.
In other words if you must sail at night to deliver a boat try to be rested, eat well, and have as few other factors as possible that reduce your sailing ability.
Another example is that it is better to know the area you are sailing in and the boat you are on if you are sailing in very heavy conditions with new crew.
One delivery sailor said that when going ashore in a foreign port it can be helpful to travel to a hotel lobby first before going to a bank or an ATM. Once you are at the ATM go back to the hotel and stay for a tea or coffee. This way anyone watching may believe you are staying at the hotel and not on your vulnerable sailboat. This same sailor said he would not carry a gun on a sailboat because the recording he had on his stereo of angry dogs kept any bad behavior away when needed.
